Home Fire Drill Day Reminds Us the Importance of Having Egress Windows

October 13th is Home Fire Drill Day, a campaign created to raise awareness and encourage families to be more prepared when it comes to fire safety.

This day also serves as an important reminder that building codes require that finished basement living areas have an emergency egress - an egress window large enough to allow safe exit out of the space in case of an emergency.

The intent of the code is to keep you and your loved one safe by requiring a means of egress in basement level living spaces. The reason for needing a means of egress are twofold; to allow for an exit in case of an emergency, and to provide access for a firefighter to gain entrance.

Sure-Dry Basement Systems is an authorized installer of DuraWell Egress Systems. In addition to providing a safe exit, our egress windows allow more natural light and fresh air into the basement to make the space feel larger and more inviting.

DuraWell Egress Systems are designed for safety.  In window wells that are deeper than 44 inches below ground level, the IRC Egress Code requires there to be steps or permanently affixed ladders to accommodate exiting the basement.  DuraWell utilizes a built-in ladder with 12" steps to promote safe and easy emergency exit.
