The '411' On Mold In Your Basement

What makes a basement smell like one?

MOLD. Mold can grow even in a "waterproofed basement"

Mold needs organic material to grow (which you have), and high relative humidity - over 60 to 70 percent. It doesn't have to be wet for mold to grow, just humid. In fact, mold won't grow underwater.

A great basement air system ensures that the relative humidity stays below 50 percent all year long.

There are a lot of mold experts. But one that tells you to eliminate the mold without eliminating the water and humidity is not helping you. Some tell you to coat your floor joists and other structural elements with anti-mold paint.

To us, this is to say that if it's humid and mold wants to grow, the paint will stop it from gorwing. Assuming that's true, what about the contents of your basement? If you have a cardboard box, does it have to be painted too? How about your sofa? Call us crazy, but if it's really dry down there with low humidity, mold won't grow with or without a coating (We aren't crazy, that's just the way it works).
